5 Signs Your HVAC Installation Was Done Wrong

Sign 1: Rooms That Are Never Comfortable

If some rooms in your home are always too hot or too cold while others are fine, it could indicate improper ductwork sizing, a system that's too large or too small, or poorly balanced airflow. A good installation addresses all of these factors.

Sign 2: The System Short-Cycles

Short-cycling means your system turns on and off frequently in short bursts instead of running normal longer cycles. This is often a sign of an oversized system -- one of the most common installation mistakes. It wastes energy and wears out components faster.

Sign 3: Unusually High Energy Bills

If your energy bills jumped significantly after a new installation, something may be wrong. While some increase is normal during extreme weather, a properly installed, properly sized system should actually be more efficient than the one it replaced.

Sign 4: Excessive Noise

Some noise is normal, but excessive rattling, buzzing, whistling, or banging often indicates installation issues. Loose ductwork, improperly mounted equipment, or undersized ducts can all cause unusual noises.

Sign 5: No Load Calculation Was Performed

If the company that installed your system didn't perform a Manual J load calculation, there's a significant chance your system isn't the right size for your home. This is the single biggest installation mistake and the hardest to fix after the fact.
